Chief Operating Officer - Remote

Jouleia is looking for a foundational team member that is passionate about making a huge climate impact while improving millions of homes.

Given the early stage of the company this will be a role that involves many hats. A strong foundation in building science and expert knowledge regarding heat pumps in particular is critical. This role will also involve a lot of direct engagement with homeowners and installers, the ability to be patient while fielding a lot of questions is important. Otherwise - the job can be tailored to the particular strengths of the candidate and will evolve over time as the company grows.

Municipal net-zero targets across Canada are in peril as the climate crisis accelerates. Current policies are projected to only achieve a 16% reduction in emissions from 2022 levels by 2050, far short of the needed targets.

Residential heating and cooling are the #1 source of emissions for most municipalities, and many have declared climate emergencies. The solution lies in empowering homeowners to swap fossil fuel powered appliances for superior, clean electric alternatives. The issue is that there is a massive homeowner education gap - plus affordability and getting equipment properly installed create a lot of additional barriers.

You’re entrepreneurial, pragmatic, a fast learner, are comfortable operating in ambiguity and are a great teammate. You have a basic understanding of building systems and are eager to help improve the comfort, efficiency, and carbon footprint of homes. You have sales experience dealing directly with customers. You find it easy to connect with people, and get excited by helping educate people and problem solve. You’re a strong communicator and feel confident interacting with a variety of people. You have a high attention to detail, are able to juggle multiple tasks at once, and hold yourself to a high standard. You’re passionate about climate change and want to be part of a team making a tangible impact in improving people’s lives and saving the planet!

What you’ll do

You’ll be responsible for implementing and growing our Home Expert Service; assisting customers in planning their heat pump upgrades, answering questions, assisting with incentives, and recruiting and co-ordinating with our installer network. Your pragmatic expertise will be key to ensuring that installers provide great solutions and experiences via our Home Expert Service. You’ll also be an integral part of the Jouleia team and will have significant impact on the overall direction of the company.

Qualifications

A strong candidate will meet many of the following requirements:

• Strong understanding of building science, and technical expertise in heat pumps in particular
• Insatiably curious
• Great communication skills, can explain complex topics in simple terms without excessive jargon
• Experience at a startup or running a small business, you deal well with ambiguity and quickly shifting priorities
• Ability to navigate tech systems such as CRMs and billing portals
• Strong organizational abilities
• A positive, pragmatic attitude
• You get stuff done quickly and efficiently, and understand that done is better than perfect
• Goes the extra mile to delight customers
• You can connect with and speak to installers, and understand their pain points and challenges
• Leadership experience, with the ability to build and train a strong team

Compensation

TBD based on candidate, plus meaningful equity

Location

Remote, but a preference to be located in the Greater Toronto Area
